How to Stay Calm When the Lights Go Out

How to Stay Calm When the Lights Go Out

When bad things happen - like big storms or power outages - it's scary. But guess what? Your brain is your superpower. Staying calm helps you think better. It helps you help others, too. Let's learn the most important things to do.

1. First: Check for Danger

Stop. Look around. Is there water rising? Do you smell gas? Are there wires down? Find the safest spot in your home. This is usually upstairs if there's flooding. Grab your emergency bag if you have one. Flashlights are better than candles - no fire risk!

2. Be a Breathing Expert

When scared, your breathing gets fast. Fight this! Try this trick: Breathe in slowly while counting to 4. Hold for 4. Breathe out for 4. Do this 5 times. Feel better? Good! This tells your brain, "We're okay."

3. Be a Helper

Now check on others. Is grandma okay? What about your little brother? Working together makes everyone braver. Give small jobs: "You hold the torch. I'll get the water." Teams are stronger!

4. Save Your Energy

Phones and flashlights will die. Use them wisely. Drink small sips of water. Eat crackers or granola bars. Rest when you can. Emergencies are like marathons - you need to last.

5. Fun Without Power

Play the alphabet game: "A is for apple we have, B is for blanket..." Tell stories about your best birthday. Sing silly songs. Laughter is like medicine for fear.

6. Make a Plan

Count your food and water. Where are extra batteries? Talk about what to do if you need help. Writing things down helps you feel in control.

7. Turn Down the Scary News

Too much bad news makes worry grow. Check for updates just 2-3 times a day. Better yet - have one grownup be the news reporter for everyone.

8. Rest Up

If it's nighttime, try to sleep. Daytime? Take quiet breaks. Close your eyes and imagine your favourite place. You'll need your energy later.

Remember This

Fear is normal. Brave isn't about not being scared - it's about doing what's needed even when scared. You've got this! And when it's over, you'll know you can handle tough things.
